Draft Strategy
By: Mike
August 26, 2008, draft is listed on the web page to begin in an hour or maybe yours is scheduled to begin on Saturday at your buddies house. I am sure at this point both of these apply to you. Are you ready for this draft? Ask yourself if you have a draft strategy in place and if you answer no then you are not ready. Most of you know the owners in your league by a league site or a bunch of buddies you know from High School or college so you know the competition. This information is useful because you can base how much time you need to spend on your strategy but if I am you I would put the same amount into both drafts.
I am going into my 8th season of playing fantasy football and have fared pretty well from the beginning. In fact my first year I thought I was getting pushed into a league where I may not even be interested in playing fantasy football after the first season. This league was a 16 team dynasty lDP league, 35 player roster and a rookie draft (taxi squad). I was given the 35 page rulebook and was like damn I must have been the final team added to this complex scoring system league. After countless hours of research, players studies, excel spreadsheets, and more I went to the draft feeling good about my chances at the draft. Well after making maybe 5-10 FA moves (trading in this league was a pain because I knew one guy) I won the league taking home the trophy and the big payout. Since then I have used the same strategy.
If this is your first year or you’re a seasoned vet I am sure you have done some prep for your drafts but hopefully I can give you some tips on making it easier for you in the coming weeks.
- Know The Rules – Read the rule book, the website, or ask your commish on this. Drafting a RB that does not catch a lot of passes ahead of a guy that does in your Point Per Reception league does not make much sense.
- Once you know the rules there are a few sites that you can search that you can even import your scoring into to make a cheat sheet for you. Just be careful that you import the correct information before you export it.
- Do some research on players in deeper leagues that you can snag before someone else does in your league.
- Get plenty of info but organize it before you arrive and know where every thing is don’t hold up the draft or rush a pick because you can not find some info in your mounds of paperwork. More sometimes is worse.
- Bring your info, a couple of pens, and a nice cool beverage.
Don’t be “That Guy”
“That Guy” Prime Example List
- Drafts his favorite player from college that is a 4th string WR with the first overall pick
- Always requests a little more time before each pick and always makes a bad pick
- Goes back to the convienent store for the second time because while buying his case of natty light and pack of smokes he forgot his draft guide that expired 4 weeks ago.
- Last but not least: This is the guy that has the #2 pick in the draft and selects a guy that was taken already. Each round following that he does the same thing. In my league this player is called the Beer Bitch a newly installed rule that if you make this mistake you will become the guy to get my beer for that round.
So all in all what I am trying to get across in this is be prepared for your drafts and you will succeed.
