Jeter Ties Gehrig

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter tied Lou Gehrig's franchise record for hits on Wednesday night.

Jeter, who had been stuck in a slump since approaching the record this past weekend, tied Gehrig with a single to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning.

He took his helmet off twice, acknowledging a rabid crowd that would have cheered as long as the umpires allowed them.

Jeter entered the game three hits away from Gehrig. He reached on a bunt single in the first inning and after grounding out in the third, drilled a ground-rule double to center field in the fifth.

He now sits alongside Gehrig with 2,721 hits, more than any other Yankee in the team's storied history.
